Multigauge swatch in LINGO linen from Artfibers

Lingo has called out to be a skirt ever since we started this line. Years ago Artfibers had a linen blend that worked very nicely for “pattern evolution shaping”. Lingo, being 100% linen seemed even more ideal for this technique, so I began experimenting with stitch patterns.

What is “pattern evolution shaping”, you might ask. Well, have you ever searched for stitch patterns that gave you the same stitch gauge so you could interject them into a knitting project? This is taking the thought in the opposite direction — looking for stitch patterns that change the stitch gauge in a gradual way. Combining this idea with going to larger and larger needles to help flare the fabric is the basis of this simple skirt design.

The surprise of Lingo is that it has much stronger properties as 100% linen than the previous linen blend did. Therefore, stitch patterns that I’d imagined would give a nice effect (such as some knit and purl patterns and some rib patterns) were not pleasing, and other stitch patterns that I thought would look like a scrambled mess (such as lace) were beautiful – even on a much larger needle!
