Tools
Body and Shawl Collar knit on #10.5 US needles (you will need a 29″long circular needle for the shawl collar).
Size 10 US needles for the body and sleeve bands.
Darning needle, scissors, measuring tape, stitch holders
BACK
1. Cast on 62 (69, 77) sts on size 10 needles. Work in K2, P2 rib until piece measures 6 ins.
2. Change to size 10.5 needles and Stockinette stitch. Work even until piece measures 5.2 (5.6, 6) ins [approx. 26 (28, 30) rows], excluding rib band.
3. Armhole Shaping: Cast off 3 (3, 4) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every alternate row for 8 (14, 16) rows until 48 (50, 54) sts remain. Continue on with no further shaping until armhole measures 7.6 (8, 8.4) ins. [approximately 38 (40, 42) armhole rows].
4. Shape Neck: These instructions are for working both sides at the same time. Alternatively, you can place one side on stitch holders, work up one side, then re-attach the yarn to the other side and repeat the shaping as a mirror image.
To work both sides at the same time: Work 15 (16, 17) sts. Slip the next 18 (18, 20) sts to a holder (this is the base of the neck). With a second ball of yarn, work the remaining 15 (16, 17) sts. Decrease 1 st at the neck edge every row 2 (3, 3) times.
5. Shoulder Shaping: Bind off the remaining 13 (13, 14) stitches loosely.
FRONT (The right side of the front is worked first)
1. Cast on 32 (35, 39) sts on size 10 needles. Work in K2, p2 rib for 6 ins.
2. Change to size 10.5 needles and Stockinette st. Increase 2 (3, 3) sts evenly spaced across the first row to 26 (38, 42 sts total. Work even until piece measures 3.2 (3.6, 3.6) ins [approx 16 (18, 18) rows] excluding rib band.
3. Shape Neck: Note that you will not have completed all of the neck shaping when you start the armhole shaping on the opposite side edge. You must continue the neck shaping at the same time. Decrease 1 st at the neck edge (right end) of the next row, then every 3rd row 5 (7, 7) times, then every 4th row 8 (7,8) times.
4. When the work measures 5.2 (5.6, 6) ins from the rib band, shape the armhole as follows: Bind off 3 (3, 4) sts at the armhole edge. Decrease 1 st at the armhole edge on every alternate row for 8 (14, 16) rows. Complete shaping the neck edge until 13 (13, 14) sts remain and length of the piece matches the Back.
6. Bind off as for Back.
7. Left Jacket front: Work as for the right side, reversing shapings as a mirror image.
SLEEVES (make 2)
1. Cast on 38 (42, 46) sts on size 10 needles. Work in K2, P2 rib for 3 inches.
2. Change to size 10.5 needles and Stockinette st.
3. Increase 1 st at both ends of every 9th row once, then every 10th row 2 times to 44 (48, 52) sts.
4. Work even until sleeve measures 7.3 (7.5, 7.5) ins, excluding rib band.
5. Shape Cap: Bind off 3 (3, 4) sts at the beginning of the next two rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every 2nd row 3 (6, 7) times, then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 6 (2, 2) times, then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 2nd row 3 (6, 6) times. Bind off the remaining 14 sts loosely.
6. Shoulder Seams: Sew front to back at both shoulders.
SHAWL COLLAR
1. Using size size 10.5 circular needles and with right side of work facing you: pick up and work 37 (38, 42) sts from the right front neck edge, 2 (2, 3) sts from the right back neck edge, 18 (18, 20) sts from the back neck holder, 2 (2, 3) sts from the left back neck edge, and 37 (38, 42) sts from the left front neck edge. Total 96 (98, 110) sts. Decrease from 96 (98, 110) to 84 (84, 96) by: P3 (3, 9), P2tog, *p6 (5, 5), p2tog; rep from * 11 (13, 13) times to the last 3 (2, 8), p3 (2, 8).
2. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail to weave in later. With the right side facing you, slip the first 30 (29, 33) sts of the right neckline onto the right needle. Join the yarn and work the next 24 (26, 30) sts in k2, p2 rib across the back neckline. *turn the work. Work in pattern across the previous row, then a further 2 sts; repeat from * until all neckline sts are being worked.
3. Work even until back of collar measures 6 inches or desired length (you might try it on at this point to see how you like the length). Bind off very loosely in pattern.
4. Sew the collar ends down to the edge of the front opening.
FINISHING
1. Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit. Sew side and sleeve seams.
2. Darn/ weave/sew in all loose ends.
3. Block if needed.
4. Add a button and crocheted loop, or pin as a closure.

Is there a way to print the pattern w/o the photos?
Hi Donna!
Feel free to cut and paste the text into a word document before you print.

I am so glad to have you back in the city. I missed you during the time that you were gone.
Now again, there’s a whole new reason to visit San Francisco from southern California.
Your yarns are great!
Thank you,
Greg

I would also love to see this with a raglan sleeve. I visited your wonderful store when in SF earlier this month and am working on my first custom project. Artfibers and the whole experience were fabulous–I can’t wait to get back!
Hi Francy!
Thanks for your great comments! We look forward to seeing you when you return.
As for a raglan version of the jacket, as I said in a post on September 5, 2010, we can modify this pattern easily using the software that we used for your custom pattern. Send us an email whenever you’re ready!
