Six Lace Scarf Patterns
by
rox

It seems that for many of us, meeting with groups of other fiberholics ensures us a time slot to get something accomplished on a project or two. The only dilemma is all of the great storytelling that goes on, inspiring the occasional curse word as someone discovers that while howling with laughter they skipped a beat in the pattern they’d been following.

If you are like me, you’ll let that cable go freeform, or rationalize random changes to an entirely different stitch pattern; something less challenging like Garter Stitch or Stockinette might be just the thing!

Over the years, I’ve found very few people who are able to detach themselves from their original plan, so, with that in mind, here are some new scarf patterns for the yarns in the August sampler that I hope will be knitable in multitasking situations. So take these projects to your groups, business meetings, the theater, dates, disco… am I getting carried away here? – you be the judge!

One thing you might notice is that most of our painted colors are mild in their variegation, so you have far more choices of color with Artfibers yarns for lace and other complex looking stitch patterns! We are always ready to give you a second opinion on your color or yarn choice for any reason, so don’t hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes for a joyful Artfibers experience!

Drop Stitch Lace in Artfibers TSUKI kid mohair & silk

Tsuki Drop Stitch Scarf/Shawl

Description:
This is a beautiful, airy stitch pattern produced from a rib pattern with extra stitches
introduced as a yarn over and then dropped and pulled out to their origin.  Warning! This
is a very popular shawl – everyone you know will be requesting one!

Size: Approximately 16.5 inches wide X 66 inches long.
Option: You can also make 2 scarves instead;  one for youself and one for a friend, by casting on 68 sts
instead of 140)

Estimated amount of yarn required:
94 grams (or 1210 yds) of Artfibers “Tsuki” ,which is a lace-weight, silk/superkid mohair yarn or a yarn
with similar gauge in stockinette stitch
Note: 10% extra has been included in your kit to allow for differences between users.

Gauge:
22 sts to 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch
34 sts to 4 inches in Vertical Drop Stitch

Needles:
#6 US needles

Other Tools Required:
Darning Needle, scissors, tape measure

Vertical Drop Stitch (multiple of 8 plus 4 stitches):
Preparation Row: K1, *p2, k1, yo, k1, p2, k2; rep from * to the last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Row 1: As with any rib pattern, knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.  The yos will be purled
on this row.
Row 2-7: Knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.
Row 8: K1, *p2, k1, drop the next st (your extra one) off of the needle, k1, p2, k1, yo, k1; rep from * to
the last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Row 9: Same as Row 1.
Row 10-15: same as row 2-7.
Row 16: K1, *p2, k1, yo, k1, p2, k1, drop the next st (your extra one) off of the needle, k1; rep from * to
the last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Repeat rows 1-16, noting that we recommend completing row 2 before pulling the dropped stitch out all
the way to its origin.

Hint #1: Once you get a set or 2 of the stitch pattern completed, you will easily see that this is a
rib pattern.  On row 1, you are creating the extra stitch that will be dropped on row 8.  Also on row 8
you will be creating a new extra stitch that will be dropped on row 16.  That is all there is to it!
Hint #2: We have found that pulling out the dropped stitch is easier if you wait until you have
completed row 9.  Use the tip of your knitting needle to untangle the kid mohair as you pull the
droped st out all the way down to its origin.
Cast on 140 stitches on size 6 U.S. needles and work in Vertical Drop Stitch until shawl measures 66
inches long and you have just completed row 7 or 15.  Bind off loosely while working row 8 or 16.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends.  Block if necessary (usually not necessary if using Tsuki).

Note:  For substitute yarns multiply yds per sq. ft for the substitute yarn by 1.52  to factor for stitch pattern.
(This includes 10% margin of safety)
