Tall Tam & Neck Warmer in Artfibers Nanook & Heath
This great, stylish set can be worn different ways and is fun and easy to make! The neck warmer can be worn at the neck or as a second layer to the hat to change the look or add more warmth. Great holiday gifts for friends and excellent gifts as a kit for the knitters in your life. Both pieces are knitted in the round so there is almost no finishing work.
Sizes: small/med: 20-21″ head measurement (med/lg: 22-24″ head measurement)
Yarn: 105 yards of Nanook and 133 yards of Heath [this includes 10% extra to accommodate the differences between knitters].
Gauge before blocking - Nanook: 3.5 sts per inch in Garter stitch on size 8 U.S. needles. Heath: 3.5 sts per inch on size 11 U.S. needles in Garter Slip stitch.
Tools:
16″ circular needles in U.S.sizes 8 and 11 [millimeter sizes 5 and 8]
U.S. size 11 double pointed needles.

Stitch Pattern Instructions as you will do them in the round:
Garter Stitch -
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Garter Slip Stitch -
Row 1 and 2: same as Garter Stitch described above.
Row 3: *K1, sl 1; repeat from * to the end.
Row 4: *K1, yf, sl 1, yb; repeat from * to the end.
Specifications for size large are in parentheses.
Neck Warmer Instructions:
1. Using a size 8 U.S. needles and Nanook, cast on 64 (68) sts. Place a marker on the needle to mark the end of a round. Join to the first stitch, being careful that the stitches are not spiraling around the needles. Work in Garter Stitch until piece measures approximately 4 inches tall. Bind off all sts.
Tall Tam Instructions:
1. Using a size 8 U.S. needles and Nanook, cast on 64 (68) sts. Place a marker on the needle to mark the end of a round. Join to the first stitch, being careful that the stitches are not spiraling around the needles. Work 1 row of all knit stitches.
2. Change to Heath, size 11 U.S. needles, and Garter Slip stitch. Work 10 sets of the stitch pattern.
3. From now on, you will use one strand of Heath and one strand of Nanook together. Purl the next row, increasing 8 (4) stitches evenly spaced in the next row to 72 sts. Now purl another row.
4. Top of Hat:
Decrease as follows, changing to the double pointed needles when the stitches no longer fit on the circulars.
Row 1: *K10, k2tog; repeat to the end.
Row 2 and all even numbered rows: Knit all sts with no decreases.
Row 3: *K9, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 5: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 7: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 9: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 11: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 13: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 15: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 17: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 19: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Row 21: *K2tog; repeat from * to the end.
Cut yarn approximately 8 inches long, and using your darning needle, put the yarn through the remaining 6 sts.
5. Finishing:
Weave in all ends. Block hat top out to tam width by wetting the top and inserting a 9″ plate into the hat with the bottom of the plate against the top of the hat. Place the hat upside down on a rack or towel to dry. Using a hair brush, lightly brush out the Nanook to give it a fluffier look.
